Mount Rainier is a large stratovolcano of andesitic rock in the Cascade Range of western Washington. The origin of Mt. Rainier is simply explained: Fire and Ice. The mountain is a volcano born of fire and built up above the surrounding country by repeated eruptions and successive flows of lava. It is a relatively young volcano, only about one million years old. By contrast the mountains of the Cascade Range that Mount Rainier looks down upon are at least twelve million years old, created by the folding, buckling, and uplifting of the Earth's surface. Even as volcanic forces were building up this land, the slow, inevitable power of glacial ice began to shape and form it. This is an inexorable process that continues today and will alter the mountain in the tomorrows to come. Yes, the process is simple, but it deals in forces that are beyond the control, and perhaps comprehension, of humans. When Captain George Vancouver sailed into Puget Sound in 1792 he "discovered" the huge mountain that he named in honor of his friend, Rear Admiral Peter Rainier. Although he didn't know it, he was gazing upon a living volcano that was already known and valued by the Nisqually, Cowlitz, Yakama, Puyallup, and Muckleshoot peoples. As residents of the mountain's river valleys, they hunted and gathered berries in the forests and mountain meadows. For them, the mountain was an entity of power and presence, quite apart from the resources it offered. Those who followed also came to appreciate the dual physical and spiritual dimensions of the mountain's resources. Mount Rainier is a place where physical things, such as rocks, glaciers, water, plants, and animals come to mean something more: beauty, challenge, renewal, stewardship, and enjoyment. Theodore Winthrop, seeing Mt. Rainier in 1853, said: ``Only the thought of eternal peace arose from this heaven-upbearing monument like incense, and, overflowing, filled the world with deep and holy calm . . . And, studying the light and majesty of Mt. Rainier, there passed from it and entered into my being, to swell there evermore by the side of many such, a thought and an image of solemn beauty, which I could thenceforth evoke whenever in the world I must have peace or die.''
